Re: To NUMA or not to NUMA - Server emergency

Hello Trevor,

I am an ADS developer and can confirm that it was never written with NUMA in mind. It runs efficiently on multi-CPU systems but solely depends on the OS to do thread scheduling and uses the OS's memory manager with the purpose of maximizing resource usage, which I believe is different from NUMA philosophy.

Not being even a small time NUMA expert, I had reached out to Ashutosh and Mehul, who are members of performance engineering team in SAP, working with multiple database products, to help identify whether the issues you faced were NUMA related. I can understand your confusion about being asked to run Linux commands, but I believe it isn't too difficult to find out equivalent Windows commands/tools, specially for someone who configured it for you. Pardon me if I'm wrong with that assumption.

Second, it wasn't clear from your first post that you were talking about a production system. Hence there were these ideas to 'try out'.

It would help if you could give more details about the way NUMA has been configured. I believe underlying concepts are the same regardless of the OS, and collectively we should be able to identify if NUMA itself is the reason for slow performance. Also, any reasons to go for NUMA in the first place?

Regards,

Parag Mahadane
