Re: Virus scan on Windows server running Advantage 11.1

Hello,

I can't find any document with is special related to the configuration of a AntiVir and ADS.
As you write, you should expect the ADS related folders and ADS related files, from the RealTime scan of the AntiVir. Also, if you scan communication ports with the AntiVir, you should also expect from scan the default port 6262 (for UDP and/or TCP) or what you have define in the ADSCFG.exe.

Re: Slow performance of Advantage ISAM access in virtual 2012 environment

Hi Edgar

Yes we found that article a while back. It was the 1st step to some sort of improvement. All power management in WIN vm's and hosts OS and BIOS is now set to maximum performance. This improved performance quite a bit but more importantly stabilised our test speed results / made them at least consistent, whereas initially they were very inconsistent and confusing.

So even after the above, we still have a situation where the performance is very poor on the new VM environment vs old physical server

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Issue was caused by using a 32 bit trigger dll with a 64 bit ADS server.  We reverted to a 32 bit ADS server which took care of the problem.

Support for Windows Server 2012 Essentials

I downloaded the “Detailed Supported Platforms” pdf and saw that ADS 11.1 now supports SBS 2011 and Windows Server 2012 but there was no mention of Windows Server 2012 Essentials (aka.. SBS 2012).

Are there plans to support Windows Server 2012 Essentials?

Hi Richard,

This is currently not tested, but I talk with the ADS Engineering and this is on his plan to test and certify it asap.

Hi Hakan,

Thanks for the quick answer.

Do you know what kind of a timeline we’re looking at for testing?

Hi Richard,

I get the information from the engineering, that the plan for the Windows Server 2012 Essentials testing is in Q3.

SQL Server 2012 with a linked ADS server using OLDB ver 11.10

I have got an SQL Server 2012 connect to an Advantge Server version 11 with OLEDB ver 11.10.

I can run SQL querys on the SQL server and they display/Add to a table on the Advantage Server without a problem.

I am adding the same querys to a trigger but get the following error - The requested operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "Advantage" does not support the required transaction type.

Does any know if there is a way of changing the transaction type in triggers?
Or is there another way to fix this problem?

Mark

From reading this, I understand the trigger is on the MS SQL side?

In that case, an MS SQL group my be better to help out.   But with full disclosure I've not set this up or tried it here are my thoughts.

The OLE DB provide supports the transaction isolation levels of Read Committed and Cursor Stability.  Possibly if you can have your applications change to one of these particular transaction levels before updating the table that contains the trigger it may push the transaction level into the trigger and it may work.

The other thought I have it that it may just not work at all.  I believe that MS SQL supports distributed transactions (i.e. it tries to guarantee that if the update / insert / delete fails for some reason everything is rolled back including the changes on Linked Server.  Unfortunately ADS does not support this so in this case it may not work.

You are right this on the MS SQL server side!

We do not write the application so have no way of changing the transaction level. This is why i thought a trigger was a good way to go. As you do not think it will work have you any other ways of getting the data across. I can run inserts or updates on the SQL server just not in a trigger.

One thought I have is to setup a trigger in MS SQL to populate the IDs and the operation (i.e. insert, update, delete) into a secondary MS SQL table.

Then create a program (or maybe use MS SQL Command line to execute a script) that reads this secondary table and populates the Advantage database.  (i.e. read through the table and for each row look up the data from the real table and insert/update/delete in ADS - if successful, delete from the secondary MS SQL Table)

Schedule this program (or script) to execute every day (or depending on you needs every hour, 5 min. etc)

Now ADS will be automatically updated.  It may not necessarily be real time, but depending on the data and frequency you should be able to get it down to a small delay.

Setting up ADS for Remote Connection

Are there instructions for how to configure a firewall, port forwarding and an ads.ini file to be able to access an advantage database server remotely.  Here is my situation.  I have an application that connects to an advantage database in remote mode.  Right now the application and database reside on the same, internal network.  I want to be able to have my advantage database on a server across town and have my application on the other side of town access the database via the internet.  I figure I will need to make changes to my firewall, I may need to setup port forwarding and I would just have to imagine that I'm going to have to do something with the ads.ini file to tell my application how to get to the database.  With all of that said I figure I will also have to change some setting in my database (I'm using a data dictionary) to tell advantage that it is okay to accept a remote connection.

Are there any instrustructions for how to do all of these magical things?  I'm running ADS 10.x

Thank you,

CPGood

Can your engineering-team create a tdataset for version 11 which also supports servers in version 10?

We have problems with a lot of customers (>500 users in total), which are stuck at version 10.x and we have to manage / get that tdataset component working in xe8.

The best for this request will be to talk with your ADS-Sales Partner.

Hi Mike,

I just posted over in Devzone, but I'll post here as well.

When do you think you will have more information on 12?  I have clients quite literally freaking out that version 11 end of life is December this year.  That is panicking a lot of them.  We had a big meeting about transitioning time from version 11 to 12.  And I have a NUMBER of clients still on 10 because they're too scared to even invest in 11 fearing 12 will never come.

More information will help us developers save us from having to lose clients or us having to switch to a a different product to avoid losing our clients.

Also-  possibly you guys could discuss with the higher ups extneding version 11 End Life another 6 months so clients will be comfortable knowing they can take time testing production environments and not have to make the jump for 11 (or even 10) to 12 so fast.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris - as stated in my reply above to Marlene, we are still targeting an 11.1 SP for end of June 2015 and v12 for the Sept-Dec 2015 timeframe.

As for v11 end of mainstream maintenance (EOMM), I'm not sure where you read that it is December 2015.  As shown on the ADS Platforms Matrix (see here: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-35432), the v11 EOMM is currently set for December 31, 2016.  As we get closer to that date, we will evaluate along with Engineering whether it makes sense to push it out further to allow for migration.

We've connected to Local Server files from XE8 using FireDAC.  Is that not the recommended solution?

I do wonder what version of the database FireDAC expects when the connection is Remote or Internet instead of Loca thoughl. Can different server versions be connected to as long as the appropriate DLL's are installed and are those files in XE8 or in your developer library?

Thanks for the quick update Mike.

I have passed that along to the customers.  Not sure exactly the document they were looking at, but in our big customer conference we had in December two of our clients had copies of something that were taken off of either the devzone site I think.  And I can't be sure how old that was.

I gave them the link you posted today, and that dramatically alleviated concerns.

Thanks.

Chris
